sb.= Somebody

 

Telephone operations

To CALL sb. (UP)                  =

To GET HOLD OF sb.           =

To GET THROUGH TO sb.   =          To contact sb. by telephone

To MAKE A PHONE CALL =

To RING  sb. (UP)                 =

 

To RING/CALL sb. BACK    = To return a call

 

To DIAL a number                  = To mark each of the numbers of a telephone number.

 

To HOLD ON

To HANG ON                        = To wait a moment

 

To PICK UP the receiver        = To lift the receiver

 

To HANG UP

To PUT the receiver DOWN   = To replace the receiver

 

Problems

A BAD LINE                          = The call is very difficult to hear.

A WRONG NUMBER           = An error in dialing.

To BE CUT OFF                    = The call is interrupted by a mechanical fault

To BE ENGAGED                  = The phone is busy.

To HAVE CROSSED LINES  = Two separate conversations can be heard at the same time.

A COLLECT CALL               = A call paid by the person recieving the call. (USA)

REVERSE CHARGES CALL  = A call paid by the person recieving the call. (UK)

INTERNATIONAL OPERATOR= Helps you with international calls.

SPEAKING CLOCK             = Gives you the exact time.

The OPERATOR                    = Phone company official who can help with local and national calls.

THE YELLOW PAGES         = A directory of commercial services.

To LOOK UP a number          = To find a number in the telephone directory.
