United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ministry of Education Lead Teacher

Sept.2019–Jul. 2020

Responsible for improving teaching and learning at Taryam Omran Secondary Al Majd Model Primary School and Al Ghafya Elementary School (C1) in Sharjah, UAE. Encouraged educational project development at all three schools through regular staff meetings and formal and informal observations and feedback. Led distance learning training workshops in the first week of March 2020 using the Microsoft Teams platform. Monitored and encouraged distance learning and teaching innovation and taught on-line lessons to G12 students at two secondary schools in Sharjah, UAE. Developed and disseminated materials and techniques for improving distance teaching and learning. Arranged and led staff meetings with English teachers at three schools using MS Teams.

Responsible for improving teaching and learning at Taryam Omran Secondary School and Al Shahba Primary School in Sharjah. A total of over 900 students. Monitoring and supporting Abdullah Omran Cycle 1 school (grades 2-4).  Priorities included: professional development, diagnostic testing and streaming, organising staff timetables and monitoring performance through informal and formal observations. Organising speaking and listening assessment. Liaison with school administrative staff. Running the day-to-day administration of two English departments comprising 13 teachers. Taught English to cover staff shortages at several Cycle 2 and Cycle 3 schools in Ajman and Sharjah.

 

UAE Ministry of Education Lead Teacher

Sept.2017 – Jul. 2018

Humaid Bin Abdul Aziz Secondary School and Ibn Al Haitham Primary School, Ajman, UAE.

Set up and administered a new English and Design Technology Department (7 teachers) at Ibn Al Haitham Primary School (feeder school for Humaid Bin Abdul Aziz). Covered staff shortage by teaching 3 grade 8 classes (18 periods per week). Monitored administration and assessment at Humaid Bin Abdul Aziz Secondary School, which had increased in size from 360 students in July students to 580 in September. The English Department had also increased to 12 teachers, including 6 English teachers and two teachers each for Life Skills, Creative Design & innovation (CDI) and Business Studies respectively. All these teachers spoke English as their native language. Administrative responsibility for 18 teachers.

 

UAE Ministry of Education Lead Teacher

Feb. 2016 – July 2017

Humaid Bin Abdul Aziz Secondary School for Boys, Ajman, UAE.

Responsible for running a department comprising nine teachers (4 Arabic native speaking English teachers five English native speakers).  Four EMI (English as a Medium of Instruction) subjects were taught: English (new curriculum), Life Skills, and Business Studies and Creative Design and Innovation (CDI) were added to the curriculum. Role included formal and informal lesson observations and coordination with the school principal and administrative staff. Other responsibilities included teaching the Business and CDI courses while awaiting new teachers, helping to administer all English mid-term and end of term EMI examinations and organising professional development sessions. Ran teacher training sessions for Ministry of Education teachers based on sessions provided by Cambridge English teacher trainers.Member of the E-Learning Committee, responsible for helping to trouble-shoot problems with on-line testing for all Lead Teachers in Ajman Educational Sector.

 

Bridging the Gap Project Teacher

Responsible for the efficient running of an English Department comprising 6 English teachers (Arabic native speakers). Created English format timetables, set up staff meetings and reorganised the English Department computer room so that all computers were working. Installed computer assisted learning programs on all computers in the computer room and arranged a training session to introduce the programs. Set up a database for all the graded readers in the school store room. Taught university entrance examination (CEPA) preparation classes to final year students and arranged small group intervention classes for borderline students.

Information and Communications Technology      

Set up Whatsapp groups for students and teachers. Introduced students to Memrise vocabulary app. Piloted an on-line graded readers program. Designed two self-contained Access databases to help students learn new vocabulary and grammatical structures. Set up mobile device (smartphone & tablet) access to data on students' personal vocabulary and grammar databases. Students could revise and test the content of their databases on their tablets or mobile phones. Designed and implemented a Digital English Notebook using Google Docs.

Course Development          

Designed and ran courses on giving presentations and telephone English. Designed and authored a computer self-access system for learners of English. The system comprises 590 exercises divided into three levels and three skills areas (Grammar, Reading & Vocabulary). Indexed through an Access database. The programs do not need an internet connection to function.

One-week intensive course taken while working in Oman.
