Speaking activity - Ask
the students:
How did the film start?
What happened before McMurphy arrived? (mime taking medicine with tongue out)
What happened after he arrived? (mime sb who can't speak or hear)
What happened next? (mime playing cards)
What did the doctor ask? (teach 'faking' if necessary)
What happened in the group therapy session? (argument)
While the DVD is loading and the 'copyright' warning is on:
Tell the students that in parts of the film they're going to see there won't be any subtitles, so they should try to watch the actor's face and movements to help understand what they are saying.
Go to the film main menu, select 'Jump to a scene' and select scene 6 (Basketball lesson)
When the record player appears select subtitles in English.
After McMurphy spits out
the pill (after asking to turn the music down) select subtitles in students' native language.
When McMurphy says "does anyone want any of it?" (after spraying the other patients with water)
select without
subtitles
When the radio in the
nurses station appears with the World Series commentary stop the film
Post-viewing activity: ask the students to talk about what they have seen.
Mime playing basketball (arms above your head), Mime playing cards (loud music), Mime taking medicine, mime someone afraid to vote, mime throwing a dice, mime trying to lift something heavy.
These questions will also be used before viewing part 3, so make sure that different students answer the questions.
