Neoregelia sapiatibensis Pereira & Penna n. sp.

 

Subgenus Neoregelia

 

Plant : flowering about 40 cm high, stoloniferous,

about 40 cm long stolons.

Leaves : many, about 35 cm long, ligulate, ridgid, forming a crateriform rosete at the bases, 12 cm long.

Sheaths : sub-elliptic, about 8 cm long, 5 cm maximum width, white on both sides, with brunneo-lepidote spots.

Blades : sub-linear, about 27 cm long, 4 cm maximum width, acute and apiculate apex , from green to reddish on both sides, superiorly inconspicuously lepidote and inferiorly densely albo-lepidote punctate; margin densely spinous, spines not greater than 1 mm long, antrorse, dark purple, with 3 mm between them.

Scape : 30 mm long, 7 mm diameter

Scape bracts : foliaceous, serrulate, very apiculate, white, with brunneo-lepidote points on both sides.

Involucral bracts : 35 mm long, ovate, acute and apiculate, membranaceous, from green to reddish, entire, finely nerved.

Inflorescence : simple, sub-globose, complanate apex, 30 mm diameter.

.Floral bracts : narrowly lanceolate, 30 mm long, 8 mm wide, green to reddish, entire, lightly carinate to apex, spiny apex, reaching the middle of the sepals.

Flowers : including pedicels, 40 to 50 mm long.

Pedicels : 5 to 10 mm long, white.

Sepals : lightly asymmetric, 20 mm long, lanceolate, shortly acuminate, 2 mm connate, glabrous, reddish in the inferior half and green in the superior half.

Petals : 32 mm long, 3 mm connate, superior lobule 10 mm long, ovate, violaceous, open at the anthesis.

Stamens : 20 mm long, filaments complanate, 6 mm adnate to the petals, white.

Anthers : lanceolate, 4 mm long, apiculate, obtuse-sagittate, dorsifixed over the base.

Ovary : cylindrical, 10 mm long, white.

Epigynic tube : 1.5 mm long.

Placentae : fixed in the middle of the locules.

Ovules : obtuse.

Typus : Brazil, Rio de Janeiro State, Barra de São

João, collected by Luiz K. Correia de Araujo, nº 40, on the 26th September 1982, Holotypus at the Herbarium Bradeanum HB . São Pedro da Aldeia, Morro Sapiatiba, 300 meters above sea level, collected by Elton M. C. Leme, nº 444, on the 23th February 1983, Paratypus at the Herbarium Bradeanum HB.

 

Comments : this species is near Neoregelia farinosa (Ule) L.B. Smith , but differs in its floral bracts laceolate and much smaller, short pedicels, sepals shortly acuminate and almost symmetrical , and narrowly elliptical sheaths.
