Plant : flowering 45 cm high.
Leaves : ligulate, 30 cm long.
Sheaths: narrowly
ovate, 10 cm long, 6 cm broad, minutely bruneo-lepidote at both sides, internally
light violaceous.
Blade : linear, about 20 cm long, 35 mm wide, with
inconspícuos scales, green, rotundate at
apex and mucronate.
Scape : erect, 30 cm long, 5 mm diameter, green, 2
cm long internodes.
Scape bracts : equaling internodes, oblong, 30 mm long, 15
mm wide, green to reddish, rotundate and mucronate at apex, totally enfolding
the scape.
Inflorescence :
simple, densely flabelate, distichous, subspicate, 12 cm long, 45 mm wide,
elliptic, exceeding the leaves.
Floral bracts : ovate, 45 mm long, 30 mm wide, lightly
carinate and incurved at apex, rosy,
exceeding the sepals.
Flowers : erect, never secund, 65 mm long.
Pedicels : 7 mm long.
Sepals : lanceolate, 35 mm long, yellowish, ecarinate,
acute at apex.
Petals : linear, 50 mm long, 7 mm broad, yellow, rotundate and emarginate at apex,
bearing 2 linear scales, 10 mm long, acute, entire.
Stamens : exserted, exceeding the petals.
Style : exceeding the anthers.
Filaments : complanate, 45 mm long.
Anthers : linear, 10 mm long, sagittate at base,
rotundate and mucronate at apex.
Ovary : pyramidal , 5 mm long.
Ovules : many, caudate.

do Garrafão, 1500 m above sea level, collected by Roberto Kautsky nº 700
and
Euclidio Colnago, 29th september 1981,

Comments : this species is very close to
Vriesea duvaliana E.
Morren, differing chiefly for its oval floral bracts, almost erect,
rachis covered by the flowers, petals wholly yellow and ecarinate
sepals.
