Welcome!

I'd like to welcome Adele, Joana and Lyrene, who have recently started English courses.

Good luck!

I wish Elaine the best of luck on her exchange programme in France.

Congratulations!

Samara Oliveira took the Cambridge First Certificate in English examination in June 2003 and got grade A. She had been having classes with Viv since June 2001.

My congratulations also go to Melissa Lemos, who gave two presentations in English to an international audience in Prague in the Czech Republic.

Happy Birthday!

Happy birthday to Cristina and Cynthia, who celebrate their birthdays on the 22nd and 28th of October.

I also wish Melissa, Ana and Marliana all the best on the 11th, 20th and 21st of November respectively.

Course news

The back of notebook tests are now over for nearly everyone. The top score went to Isabel with 17 out of 20. In October and November, the main activities will be the correction of past e-mail sent to the teacher and another vocabulary test. I'm sorry, but these tests are a necessary evil. The more words you know, the better you will read, write and understand English.

What's new?

You will have noticed that there is now a tv in Viv's classroom. So far, everyone at intermediate level and above have done a video activity. Students at pre-intermediate level and below will be using the video over the next few weeks.

Don't forget that Viv has a video club. Films and tv programmes can be borrowed by students free of charge. The only thing I ask for is that you do a video worksheet based on what you have watched.

There is a list of films and programmes available in the club on Viv's web site (under 'the students' link), and on the back of this Newsletter.

What's new on the web?

If you have got cable tv which includes BBC World and/or CNN, why not practice your English by doing the TV news activity? You can find the worksheet under The students'  link, then follow the links for 'Self access worksheets'.

In the next few days I'll be adding another worksheet based on the weather forecast.

The news broadcasts usually start on the hour and the weather is at 25 minutes past the hour.

Student of the month

My student of the month for October is Marliana de Souza Alcantara. She started having classes with Viv in June 2000, and since then she has successfully passed the beginner and elementary levels. She is now doing a pre-intermediate course and is making excellent progress.

Features

Having mentioned Viv's video club in this edition of the Newsletter, I think it's a good idea to include a list of the films available as this month's feature.
