Welcome!
I'd like to start this edition by welcoming two new students: Marilena and Viviane. My thanks to Samara and Junior who recommended me.
Good luck
I wish Flavio and Daniela the best of luck for the future.
Happy
Birthday!
February and March are months with lots of student birthdays. Birthday greetings from Viv to Luis Fernando and Valeria (9th & 10th Feb.), to Fernanda and Maria Eugenia who both celebrate their birthdays on the 14th of March, and to Paula V whose birthday is on the 19th March.
What's
new?
After Viv's old CD-ROM drive broke down, he bought an CD-ROM R/W which means he can now record CDs. If you would like copies of any of the songs which you have done in class (or for levels below yours), or if you would like copies of any of his EFL computer programs, just bring a recordable CD, and I'll make copies. A full list of his songs is now on the internet with the level of English and type of worksheet that Viv has developed.
What's new
on the web?
Creating your own home page can be quick and easy (and a way to practice your English), so Viv decided to ask his students to produce their own web pages. The results can be seen in 'the students' section of his web site. The exercise is optional, so if you'd prefer not to have a page on the site, would like to remove your page, or change anything, just let Viv know. If you're a new student, Viv will be asking you if you'd like to participate, and in order to be democratic, will be putting his own 'fact file in the same section.
Carnival
Viv will be on holiday from the 10th to the 15th of February. Students with classes on Saturdays should confirm classes in advance.
Please
don't forget!
In order to plan his time effectively, Viv needs to know in advance if you are going to take a month off classes for whatever reason (business or pleasure).
Don't forget that if you cancel a block of classes at short notice, you will be charged 50% of the cost of those classes over 20% of monthly cancellations. This was explained in the 'conditions' you were given when you started your course. You can find a copy of these conditions for classes on Viv's web site under 'the teacher' link.
Vocabulary
tests!
Every year, before the 2 week Christmas break, Viv tries to find an activity which will help students to spend some time focusing on their English during the holiday. This year I told everyone they would have a vocabulary test during the first class of 2002.
Viv wasn't very happy with the results (see overleaf).
All students who failed the test once will be tested every two months. Those failing twice will have a vocab. test every month until they get a score above 15/20. If you would like to know why, see the feature for Newsletter 8 on 'back issues of the Newsletter' on the web site.
Congratulations!
To Barbara & Vanessa for graduating from university.
