 Happy Birthday!

Birthday greetings to Samara and Ricardo, who celebrate their birthdays on the 14th and 31st of August.

Welcome

A warm welcome to Samara and Valeria who have started English courses with Viv since the last issue of the Newsletter.

Welcome back

Ricardo has returned after doing an English course in the UK, and Maria Eugenia after her holiday in Portugal.

Good luck!

I hope that Milena enjoys her new life in England after being transferred there to work. Good luck to Biatriz during her holiday in Europe. I also wish Alberto and Flavio the best of luck for the future.

Congratulations!

If you're currently doing the pre-intermediate level, and it seems like there's no end to it,

Don't worry - it is possible to finish it. Junior took his final test in June and has now passed to the Intermediate level - WELL DONE!

What's new?

Since starting work as a private teacher in Rio, Viv has been regularly testing his students' vocabulary. In all this time, no one has managed to get 20 out of 20 in a test (although several people have come very close!). Therefore, I've decided to put forward a challenge! The first person to get 100% will get a month's free classes - how's that for a prize! However, there are some conditions: The minimum course duration to be eligible is: 6 months for those having 3 hours a week, 9 months - 2hrs and one year if you are only having a 1½ hour class per week. If you pass (10/20+) then you can only take the test once a month. Don't forget that for each question half a mark is for spelling and half for pronunciation!

What's new on the web?

One reason why the newsletter has not been produced for some time is because Viv has been spending a lot of time improving and expanding his internet web site. The first difference since the last edition is that Viv has now got his own domain, so the site is much easier to find. It is now at: http://www.vivquarry.com .

On the site you can now find some of Viv's songs and games, and photos from parties in 2001 and 2000 (The teacher). There are copies of Viv's grammar, vocab. and professional worksheets, plus a similar map site to that mentioned in the last newsletter, but for Rio (Practice your English). Other projects which will appear on the site in future will be Viv's Cambridge FCE worksheets and a jokes page. If you have any other ideas for improving the site let Viv know.

Features

The feature this month is for students at upper-intermediate level and above. The Republican Party in the USA seems to be amazingly clever at electing presidents who are semi-illiterate. Overleaf are "Bushisms", a parody and a joke on George W. Bush.
