I hope everyone enjoyed their carnival, and are now ready to get down to some serious work! I shall be interested to see how many of you have read the books I gave you before Christmas. In next month's newsletter I shall be putting a list of the names of everyone who has completed their books - so if you haven't started the book yet, you've got one month left!
What's new?
While in England, I collected all the notes I took during my English teaching diploma. Over the last month, I have been reviewing what I did during my one year course. I passed the RSA diploma in Kuwait in 1989, so it's about time I did some revision! I'm always looking for ways to improve my teaching, so if you have any positive suggestions, don't be afraid to mention them to me.
Please don't forget!
As far as I am aware, the majority of private language teachers (and all the English language schools) charge for their classes in advance. Therefore, if students have to miss a class, they have already paid for it and can't get a refund. I don't believe this system is fair, so I only charge at the end of a month of classes. However, please remember that I need at least 24 hours notice before a class can be cancelled in advance. Call me the day before, and I will not charge for the class providing that you do not exceed 20% of the programmed classes. This means that if you normally have two classes a week, you can cancel a maximum of two classes per month in advance. More than this and I will charge you 50% of the cost of the cancelled classes.
If you go on holiday during the year, I will reserve your place in my timetable for a maximum of four weeks per year without charge, but you must give me at least two week's warning before block cancellations. This enables me to offer your class time to someone else temporarily.
If you have been studying English with me for some time and have forgotten the conditions of classes, ask me and I'll give you another copy.
Price
There will not be any change in the cost of classes for at least two months (March & April).
Back Issues
If you have been one of Viv's students for less than one year and would like copies of past issues of the newsletter, ask Viv. I have a list of the contents to help you choose.
Contributions
Have you had a composition published in the newsletter yet? If not, get your fingers on those keyboards, or pens on paper!
Studying English abroad
I have prepared a worksheet on English courses in the UK and USA, part of which is on the back of this issue.
I have been asked to become the official agent in Brazil of a school I have worked for and can recommend (Cicero). If you or anyone you know is thinking of doing a course, I have brochures, a video and can get you a discount on the cost of the course. Lastly,
Vocab. test for all in March!
