 Yet again the Newsletter has been off the air for a month.

This time, the cause was Viv's laptop computer, which gave the terrifying message "Hard disk not present or faulty hard disk controller". Instead of trying to get my six-year-old 486 mended, I decided to invest in a new computer, which I am using to write this.

The shock which I got when my computer broke down was softened a bit by knowing that I had a one-month-old back-up of all my data files on floppy disks. A word of advice to everyone who uses a computer at home or at work: MAKE A BACK-UP OF YOUR FILES AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH!

Holidays!

Viv will be going on holiday to the UK in August. Normally, I like to go home every year, but this time, I haven't been back to England since February 1996, so I'm looking forward to seeing family and friends again! I will be setting, all of you who would like it, extra work to do during my holidays and if you give me your address, I'll send you a postcard from Britain. Don't forget that the eleventh of June is a holiday, too.

The World Cup 1

The most important football championship in the world takes place soon. Here's some vocabulary related to football.

The game

First round = Primeira rodada

Play well/badly (V) = jogar bem / mal

Match (N) = Jogo / partida

Win/Lose(V) = Ganhar/perder

Foul (N&V) = Falta

Throw in (N) = Reposicão

Corner (N) = Escanteio

Off-side (ADJ) = Impedido

Tackle (V&N) = Roubar bola

Shoot (V&N) = Chutar

Save (V&N) = Defesa

The people

Manager (N) = Técnico

Referee (N) = Árbitro

Linesman = Banderinha

Goalkeeper = Goleiro

Defender = Zagueiro

Midfield = Meio-campo

Winger = Lateral

Striker = Atacante

The supporters = Torçida

Now you should be able to discuss the matches with Viv.

Incidentally, if all goes well, Brazil and England could only play against each other once - in the FINAL!

The World Cup 2

Due to the fact that Viv enjoys football as much as the average Brazilian, I'm afraid that there won't be any classes when either Brazil or England are playing.

 THIS INFORMATION IS OUT OF DATE!

Here are the dates and times of the first-round matches:

10/6 Brazil v Scotland 12.30

15/6 England v Tunisia 09.30

16/6 Brazil v Morocco 16.00

22/6EnglandvRomenia 16.00

23/6 Brazil v Norway 16.00

26/6EnglandvColombia 16.00

I hope that in the next newsletter, I'll be able to give the dates of the second round, quarter and semi-final matches for both teams.

Good luck!

No student's work for this month, so I've included an article I wrote for an English magazine. It was written during 'Rio Cidade', so that's why the traffic came under such heavy fire.
