The editor was taking things easy in January. Therefore, at the start of '98 it has become the bi-monthly newsletter.
I hope that you all enjoyed the xmas holidays. Viv had a wonderful time in Salvador.
The christmas drink at the Queens Legs was fun. As you can see on the next page, our photgrapher was able to register the event (when he was able to work out which way to hold the camera!).
Marcio & Daniela were the darts champions, and Carlos & Leiticia won the board games title (backgammon).
What's New?
There have been several new additions to the video club. Viv was able to record Fernando Henrique's interview on CNN, so that will be available soon with a worksheet. Other novelties include: The Alien films (1,2&3), Apocayps now, The blues brothers and Steve Martin in The man with two brains. Just ask Viv for an updated version of the films available if you are interested in improving your listening.
Did you know...?
If you are working in an area that involves frequent trips away from Rio, Viv's telephone English course may be of interest to you.
This is how it works: You are given a task to complete, and an explanation of vocabulary and grammar that you will need to complete the task. A time is arranged each week for you to call Viv and complete the tasks. The conversation is recorded and can be analysed later by both teacher and student.
The functional areas covered by the course include:
Making & cancelling appointments, asking for and giving information, booking a flight, hiring a car, travelling by bus & train, and making and dealing with complaints.
The course is only really suitable for students at or above intermediate level, and costs is $15 per session, including a one hour feedback session every two weeks.
Carnival!
Viv will be on holiday, enjoying the delights of the Rio carnival from the 21st to the 28th of February. However, I'll be staying in Rio, so if you would normally have a class on the 26th or 27th of Feb. and don't want to cancel, just arrange a time with Viv.
Your contributions.
The composition of the month for February is by Cristina, who works at Shell Brazil and is preparing to take the Cambridge First Certificate Exam this year.
If you have the facilities, I would recomend always using a computer to do your compositions. There are some points to remember, though.
Please double-space and use a large font (15 or 20), this gives Viv room for his symbols. Also, don't use the spell check - it hides mistakes that you make naturally, and finally, always save the 2nd & 3rd drafts under a new name.
Eg. For this month's essay:
LNENGTY1 (1st draft)
and LNENGTY2 (2nd draft)
KEEP WRITING! It's the best way to improve and revise vocabulary, grammar and everything else for that matter.
