Summary
of the film
“One flew over the Cuckoo`s Nest” is a film about people`s relationships in a mental hospital. The main character is the patient, McMurphy, who was sent to the mental hospital from prison because he didn`t want to help in prison activities.
The patients spent hours of their day playing cards and having group therapy, and they argued about personal and group problems during this therapy. Ratched, a cold chief nurse, played the therapist`s role. One day, for example, they argued about the patients’ freedom to watch the World Series baseball match on tv. Ratched asked them to vote about this, but they voted against it because they were afraid of the change in their routine.
McMurphy was very clever, and one day he escaped from the hospital by climbing the fence. He took the patients fishing. After this, they went back to the mental hospital.
McMurphy`s best friend at the hospital was “Chief” Bromden, a huge silent Indian giant who pretended to be deaf and dumb. They were always talking about escaping from the hospital.
One day, the patients had a party during the night. They drank alcoholic drinks, danced, and Billy Bibbet, a pathetic patient, spent the night with McMurphy`s girlfriend. When Ratched arrived at the hospital, she saw the mess and realized that Billy wasn`t with the other patients. Then she saw him with the girl in a room. He was very nervous and asked her not to tell his mother about it. She replied that she would tell her, and then he committed suicide. McMurphy was furious and he tried to strangle Ratched. Because of this, McMurphy had a lobotomy and he became a vegetable. As a result, the “chief” decided to kill McMurphy by suffocating him. After that the “chief” escaped from the mental hospital, but the other patients stayed in the ward.
